Whitening lightens the natural colour of teeth using a peroxide gel, either applied in the clinic or in custom-made trays you wear at home. It is cosmetic, it is not permanent, and it does not work on everything — crowns, fillings and some types of staining do not change colour. We would rather tell you that before you pay than afterwards.
When this is usually needed
- Teeth that have yellowed gradually with age
- Staining from coffee, tea or smoking
- Wanting a lighter shade before an event
What happens, step by step
Examination
Whitening on untreated decay or gum disease is uncomfortable and unwise, so those are treated first.
Honest expectation setting
We look at the cause of your discolouration and tell you what change is realistic — including when the answer is very little.
Clean first
Scaling removes surface staining, and sometimes that alone is enough. If it is, we will say so.
In-clinic or take-home
In-clinic is one appointment. Take-home uses custom trays over about two weeks and often gives a more even result.
Review
We check the result and note the shade achieved.
Before any treatment
This treatment may not be suitable for every patient. Whether it is appropriate for you depends on an examination at the clinic. Before we begin, we will assess your teeth and gums, take an updated medical history, explain the available options, and obtain your consent. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis or a treatment recommendation for your individual case.
Aftercare
- Sensitivity to cold for a few days is common and settles.
- Avoid strongly coloured food and drink for 48 hours — coffee, tea, curry, red wine, soy sauce.
- Results fade over one to three years depending on your habits.
- Existing crowns and fillings will not change colour and may need replacing afterwards to match. Factor that into the cost before you start.
Common questions
How much does teeth whitening cost in Malaysia?
Indicatively RM 700–1,500 here depending on whether you choose in-clinic or take-home trays. Confirmed after examination.
Is it safe?
Professionally supervised whitening at regulated concentrations is well established. The main side effect is temporary sensitivity. Unsupervised high-concentration products bought online are a different matter and can damage gums.
How white will my teeth get?
It varies, and we cannot promise a specific shade. Yellowish discolouration responds well; grey tones respond poorly; tetracycline staining barely responds at all. We will tell you which you have.
Will it work on my crowns and fillings?
No. Only natural tooth structure lightens. If you have a white filling or crown on a front tooth, it may need replacing afterwards to match, which is an additional cost.
How long does it last?
Typically one to three years, shorter if you smoke or drink a lot of coffee or tea. Occasional top-ups with your trays extend it.
